Wisdom of oneness

Posted on Jan 20th, 2009 by HeyOK : Bridgebuilder HeyOK
This little blurb was sent from my Aunt & Uncle.  They said it was a part of a recent sermon and thought I should have it.

Passing it on...

An ancient rabbi once asked his pupils how they could tell when the
night had ended and the day was on its way back. Could it be, asked
one student, when you can see an animal in the distance and tell
whether it is a sheep or a dog?
No, answered the Rabbi.
Could it be, inquired another, when you can look at a tree in the
distance and tell whether it is a fig tree or a peach tree?
No, the Rabbi replied.
Well, then, what is it? his pupils demanded.
The wise old teacher responded with words of immense wisdom: It is
when you look on the face of any woman or man and see that she or he
is your sister or brother. Because if you cannot do this, then no
matter what time it is, it is still night.

I have to say I didn’t know where that was going. I like it a lot.

woaow! amazing. This could be the single thought one does need! I’m not there yet!

But…what to do with the snake that you have recognized as your brother?

I guess we should salute him at a distance. I mean “biting distance”!

It may be that we see all people as part of ourselves, but they don’t.  Well, I’m not there yet so I should not worry too much.

Love to you, my brother

Ongoing work to do for me in this area as well…  though I do feel like the sun is rising.

My sisters and brothers make some questionable choices and actions sometimes.  Difference between accepting them and accepting that…  know what I mean?

SO good to see you Patrick.

Yes, that’s it, isn’t it? And Patrick’s mention of the snake-brother reminds me of one particular area where I’m so not there yet, where I seem unable (or unwilling) to see the person for the deed. “But it’s so wrong… and if I accept the person am I not condoning the deed?”

For me, I feel I have to let go of the judgment of the deed before I can truly (ie, non-intellectually) recognize the person behind the thing as my brother or sister. Not ignoring the warts or denying them; not loving in spite of the warts; but loving as if there are none and never were any. Isn’t it just my judgment that shows me warts? Is there a place for judgment at all on the new earth?

Questions… questions… And I see that my struggle really is this: Aren’t there some things that people do that just plain are wrong?

Ruth you put the struggle in words so well.
Maybe the word judgment has to much attached to it.  It comes from a place of knowing better which I cannot feel I always do.  Searching for a new word — maybe discernment.

Being able to discern why a brother/sister would act in a certain way yet not accepting the action itself as OK.

There are some things just not OK.  An easy (maybe easy) one folks could agree on is pedophilia.  I can think of absolutely NO instance where it is acceptable for a grown person to take advantage of a child in this way.  Yet if I meet a grown person who has done or is doing so I can choose how to react.  I can choose to see they are a person.  I can tell them I will do everything in my power to stop them and yet do this in a way which accepts they are a fellow human being.  Maybe I’m opening a can of worms.  That’s just the worst instance I can think of.

I say the dawn is coming still… to even be able to think on these things and share those thoughts means the dawn is coming IMO.

Blessings, David
