E Pluribus Unum
Last night the nurse I was working with mentioned he'd heard that In God We Trust has only been the US motto since the mid 50's --- interesting I thought given the current state of politics here in my country and how often Gods guidance of our actions is mentioned. Started a little googling... E PLURIBUS UNUM More info from another source --- seems "In God We Trust" was referenced in Star Spangled Banner and a 2 cent coin in early 1800's yet not taken on as a second motto until 1956. And the words "One Nation under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954... Versions of the Pledge:
[E Pluribus Unum] [Lat.,=one made out of many], motto on the Great Seal of the United States and on many U.S. coins. Although selected in 1776 by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson for the Continental Congress, it was not officially adopted as a national motto until six years later.
* 1892 to 1923: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
* 1923 to 1954: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
* 1954 to Present: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
Have an inkling many of you would like to know as well.

Thanks David. You have done a great public service by sharing this! Mary_C
Yes, our founding fathers did not believe in God the way most Evangelicals would like to claim… at least in my opinion… I am always interested in truth too-so keep us informed…
I watched a program on the History channel (I believe) that addressed these facts. It's been some time ago.
Of note also (probably more so to me as Unitarian Universalist) is that both John Adams and Benjamin Franklin attended, at various points in their lives (without membership) the Unitarian church. Were they referring only to a Christian God? I would beg to differ.
This is a quote from Benjamin Franklin - courtesy of the UUA, where I knew I could find it, in the last year of his life.
“I believe in one God, creator of the Universe. That he governs it in his providence. That he ought to be worshipped. That the most acceptable service we can render to Him is doing good to his other Children. That the soul of Man is immortal, and will be treated with Justice in another Life respecting its conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental Principles of all sound Religion, and I regard them as you do in whatever Sect I meet with them.
Thanks all I knew folks would find this interesting… and again AMEN Ben!
Posted this so long ago… as you can see many have chosen to leave ZNG and even some comments are gone - “Ben”. Sad yet how it works. The info is still good!
Blessings, David
